Carter scores 25 as Wichita State beats Southern Illinois

Jan 15, 2015 - 3:50 AM Wichita, KS (SportsNetwork.com) - Darius Carter scored a career-high 25 points to help 13th-ranked Wichita State beat Southern Illinois 67-55 on Wednesday night.

Ron Baker had 11 points and Tekele Cotton added 10 in the Shockers' wire-to- wire victory. Both also registered five assists.

Wichita State (15-2, 5-0 MVC) set a school record with its 26th straight home win and extended its Missouri Valley Conference regular-season win streak to 23 games, the longest all-time by any current league member.

Deion Lavender scored 15 points and Bola Olaniyan had 12 with 10 rebounds for the Salukis (7-11, 0-5), who have dropped seven in a row.

The Shockers scored the game's first nine points and grabbed a 16-4 lead on a Cotton 3-pointer a little more than six minutes in. A jumper by Carter made it 27-11 with 7:13 remaining in the first half, but Southern Illinois poured in seven straight points to trim its deficit to single digits.

Wichita State ended the frame on an 11-4 burst and maintained a double-digit lead throughout the second half.

The Shockers shot 50 percent and outscored the Salukis 34-22 in the paint ... Southern Illinois has opened MVC play with five consecutive losses for the first time since 1986-87.
