Hield, No. 21 OU routs No. 15 WVU

Feb 4, 2015 - 4:23 AM Norman, OK (SportsNetwork.com) - Buddy Hield scored 21 points and No. 21 Oklahoma earned a bit of revenge with a 71-52 victory over No. 15 West Virginia on Tuesday.

The Mountaineers embarrassed the Sooners on Jan. 13 in a 21-point rout that saw West Virginia force 22 turnovers, but it was Oklahoma (15-7, 6-4 Big 12) that won the turnover battle (15-13) in the rematch.

Hield shot an efficient 8-of-13 from the floor and 5-of-7 from 3-point range to highlight an offense that made 61 percent of its shots. Jordan Woodard added 12 points, and Ryan Spangler chipped in with 10 points and six rebounds in the Sooners' third straight win.

"They were very, very good," West Virginia head coach Bob Huggins said of the Sooners.

Juwan Staten and Gary Browne went for 15 and 12 points, respectively, for West Virginia (18-4, 6-3), which had its three-game winning streak snapped.

Devin Williams, who had 14 points and 11 rebounds against the Sooners last month, sat out due to an illness, and the Mountaineers certainly missed his presence inside.

Backdoor cuts, pinpoint passes and forced turnovers sparked Oklahoma's 13-0 run in the first half. Khadeem Lattin scored off a steal to cap the five- minute surge and give the Sooners a 27-11 cushion.

A Hield 3-pointer stretched the margin to 34-15 with under four minutes left in the half, and it was a 35-24 advantage in Oklahoma's favor heading into halftime.

West Virginia trimmed its deficit down to nine, 49-40, with 10 minutes to play, but the Mountaineers missed their next 10 field goal attempts. The Sooners extended their lead to 59-43 during the drought, and led comfortably the rest of the way.

"I thought our guys responded with some good stops and boards and pushed it back out there midway in the second half," OU head coach Lon Kruger said. "Any Big 12 win is good and against a really good club like this it makes it even better."

West Virginia did not attempt a free throw until 4:21 elapsed in the second half and finished 5-of-11 from the line ... Oklahoma only made half (11-of-22) of its free throws ... West Virginia fell to 10-2 away from home ... Oklahoma improved to 10-1 at home ... The Mountaineers came in No. 1 in the nation in turnover margin (10.0) ... The Sooners were playing their 10th game (5-5) against a ranked opponent.
