Gonzaga bounces back from first loss, defeats Virginia Tech

Nov 25, 2007 - 6:54 AM ANCHORAGE, Alaska (Ticker) -- Gonzaga used some hot second-half shooting to make sure that it left Alaska with just one loss.

Matt Bouldin scored 20 points and Abdullahi Kuso added 19 and 10 rebounds as the 14th-ranked Bulldogs cruised to an 82-64 victory over Virginia Tech in the third-place game of the Great Alaska Shootout on Saturday.

Gonzaga (5-1) bounced back after suffering its first loss of the season on Friday, a 73-63 setback to Texas Tech, behind 64 percent (16-of-25) shooting in the second half.

The Bulldogs shot 39 percent from the field in Friday's loss as they failed to score 74 points for the first time this season.

Bouldin led the charge in the second half, making four 3-pointers and shooting 6-of-7 from the arc overall. The Bulldogs also led by double digits for the final 19:27 of the game.

Jeremy Pargo added 10 points, a career-high 13 assists and four steals for Gonzaga after scoring just two in the loss to the Red Raiders.

Gonzaga used a 10-2 run to take a 30-21 lead with 6:14 to play in the first half and held an eight-point advantage at the break.

The Bulldogs outscored the Hokies, 14-6, to open the second half to double their lead to 16 points at 55-39 with 14:50 to play.

A.D. Vassallo scored 20 points to lead Virginia Tech (2-2), which lost its second in a row after starting the year with two straight wins.

Deron Washington added 11 points for the Hokies, who were out rebounded, 32-24, and committed 16 turnovers.
