Pitino seeks 500th career win

Dec 15, 2007 - 2:18 PM No. 20 Louisville (5-2) at Purdue (5-2) 3:30 pm EST

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) - Rick Pitino again seeks career win No. 500 Saturday when he guides No. 20 Louisville against Purdue in the John Wooden Tradition.

It will be Pitino's second bid for the milestone as the Cardinals are coming off a 70-65 defeat to Dayton on December 8. With a victory, Pitino would be the 21st coach to reach 500 wins, and his 499-184 record (147-60 at Louisville) over 22 seasons would make him the 14th fastest coach to do it.

The Cardinals will be without sophomore center Derrick Caracter, who was suspended indefinitely on Monday for breaking an agreement he signed with the team. He is the fifth front line player and third starter - the others being David Padgett and Juan Palacios - to be sidelined this season as the Cardinals have just seven scholarship players available on the roster.

Louisville will rely once again on sophomore Earl Clark, who is averaging 14.1 points and 11.9 rebounds. The 6-9 forward has recorded six double-doubles this season.

Purdue is allowing 58.0 points per game, which ranks 15th in the nation.

Freshman Scott Martin is scoring 11.9 points per game to lead the Boilermakers, who are coming off a 73-63 defeat at Missouri on December 8.

Purdue leads the all-time series 10-5.
