Wallace, Georgetown too much for Fordham

Dec 31, 2007 - 10:45 PM WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Jonathan Wallace and seventh-ranked Georgetown proved to be too much for Fordham to handle.

Wallace scored 19 points to lead five players in double figures as the Hoyas closed out 2007 with an easy 82-55 victory over the Rams on Monday.

Georgetown (10-1) jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead on 3-pointers by DaJuan Summers and Austin Freeman along with layups from Jessie Sapp and Wallace.

"Our main point of emphasis was setting a tempo we could thrive on," Wallace said. "Guys came out focused. It's fun to play like that."

Fordham (6-6) closed within 10-5 on a basket and three free throws by leading scorer Bryant Dunston.

But the Hoyas took charge from there, racing out to a 29-9 lead over the next four minutes. Summers accounted for seven points with two layups and a 3-pointer and finished the first half with 13 points, helping Georgetown take a commanding 50-27 lead at the break.

"I think we did a much better job of getting the ball inside and getting it back out - just the flow of our offense and getting different type of looks other than just coming down and whipping it around the horn," Georgetown coach John Thompson III said. "When you get that variance, then everything becomes open."

Wallace became Georgetown's career leader in 3-pointers made, breaking the record of 189 set by Kevin Braswell from 1998-2002 on a shot from the top of the arc with 14:32 remaining in the first half.

"A lot of good shooters have come through in the past," Wallace said "It's a blessing to be in good company."

Georgetown scored the first five points of the second half on a 3-pointer by senior center Roy Hibbert and a jumper by Wallace, as the lead grew to as many as 35 points in the final minutes.

Summers finished with 15 points and a team-best nine rebounds. Freeman chipped in with 12 points while Hibbert and Sapp each added 11.

The Hoyas were outrebounded by the Rams 33-32, but did shoot almost 57 percent (30-of-53) from the floor. Fordham shot just 29 percent (18-of-61).

"They just made everything they threw up," Rams coach Dereck Whittenburg said. "We missed every shot we could possibly get - point-blank range, layups, wide-open 3-point shots.

"We kind of got hit in the mouth. We responded as good as we could, but they're just better players."

Guard Marcus Strout paced Fordham with 25 points, including six 3-pointers. Dunston added 20.
