Brook Lopez, Stanford have few issues with Oregon State
Jan 11, 2008 - 6:44 AM CORVALLIS, Oregon (Ticker) -- It did not take much for Brook Lopez and Stanford to start off their Northwest road trip in good fashion.Lopez scored 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds as the No. 23 Cardinal captured a 66-46 victory over Pac-10 Conference rival Oregon State on Thursday.
Lawrence Hill scored 13 points and Anthony Goods added 12 for Stanford (13-2, 2-1 Pac-10), which will enter a Sunday matchup at Oregon with a two-game winning streak.
The win was a good one for the Cardinal, who were coming off a tough 52-46 victory over Southern California last Saturday in which they shot just 27 percent (17-of-63) and committed 23 turnovers.
Stanford rebounded with a strong start against Oregon State, the lone Pac-10 team to enter league play without a winning record (6-6).
In fact, the Beavers dropped their fifth straight conference contest dating back to a 3-15 campaign last year.
"It wasn't pretty," Oregon State coach John Jay said. "We gave great effort against a team that without question is the best team we have played. For us, at this point in time, to understand what it is going to be like playing against a team like that is good for us."
The Cardinal scored the first seven points of the game and grabbed a 15-2 lead with just under 4 1/2 minutes expired behind the 3-point shooting of Goods and Hill.
Hill went on to make his first three attempts from the arc as Stanford built a 24-8 advantage with 11:53 remaining.
"I thought that we were ready to play from the start and it sort of carried over," Stanford coach Trent Johnson said.
Overall, the Cardinal connected on five 3-pointers in the opening 20 minutes to hold a 39-20 lead - an effort that nearly matched the Beavers' output for the game.
"They can make shots," Oregon State forward Omari Johnson said. "The Lopez twins, they all can make shots. It makes it difficult."
Stanford led most of the second half by 20 points as it beat Oregon State (6-9, 0-3) for the fifth straight time and 16th in the last 17 meetings.
Despite win, Trent Johnson was concerned about the Cardinal's slim 42-36 advantage in rebounding, with the Beavers collecting 17 offensive boards.
"We have got to get our rebounding cleared up," he said. "We are breaking down in various parts of our game. Last time against USC, we didn't shoot very well but we were very dominant on the glass. Tonight, there were way too many offensive rebounds."
Omari Johnson was the lone Beaver in double figures with 11 points. He also grabbed eight rebounds, including six offensive.
Seth Tarver and C.J. Giles added seven points apiece for Oregon State, which shot 30 percent (17-of-56), including 0-of-8 from the 3-point arc.
