UCLA hosts Washington State in huge Pac-10 clash

Jan 12, 2008 - 2:36 PM No. 4 Washington St (14-0) at No. 5 Ucla (15-1) 2:30 pm EST

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) - For just the sixth time in Pac-10 history, two top-five teams will square off. And if history plays any roll, Washington State may struggle.

The fourth-ranked Cougars attempt to get a rare win against No. 5 UCLA when the schools meet Saturday.

Washington State (14-0, 2-0 Pac-10) is off to its best start in 91 years and is just three wins away from matching the best start in school history set during the 1914-15 campaign.

However, the Cougars have lost six straight games to UCLA and 28 of their past 29. Washington State is just 1-50 all-time against the Bruins on the road with its only win coming on February 5, 2004 at the Pauley Pavilion.

Daven Harmeling scored a season-high 19 points and Aron Baynes added 18 to lead the Cougars to a 73-58 victory over Southern California on Thursday.

The Bruins (15-1, 3-0) enter on an eight-game winning streak as they have won 15 of the first 16 games for the second consecutive season.

UCLA is coming off a 69-55 victory over Washington on Thursday. Russell Westbrook scored 18 points and Luc Richard Mbah a Moute added 17 to pace the Bruins.

The Bruins, who have won the past two Pac-10 regular season titles, were without starting point guard Darren Collison for most of the second half after he suffered a hip contusion. The junior guard did practice on Friday and is listed as probable for Saturday's tilt.
