Landry, big second half power Wisconsin to Big Ten victory
Jan 20, 2008 - 6:53 AM MADISON, Wisconsin (Ticker) -- Wisconsin decided to celebrate the 10th anniversary of their home, the Kohl Center, by doing something it has never done before.Marcus Landry scored a career-high 21 points for No. 17 Wisconsin en route to a 62-50 victory over Northwestern in Big Ten Conference action on Saturday.
Landry became the fifth different Badger to post 20-plus points in the team's last five conference games, marking the first time in school history that had happened.
"I believe somebody will have 20 points the next game, that's just what I believe," Landry said to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. "The scoring is so well-balanced that on any given night a guy can score double digits. Tonight, it just happened to be my night."
Joe Krabbenhoft added 13 for the Badgers (15-2, 5-0 Big Ten), who played just seven players and shot more free throws (37) than they had field-goal attempts (35).
Leading just 22-20 at intermission, Landry and Krabbenhoft combined for seven points of the eight points Wisconsin scored during the opening 4:51. It also held Northwestern without a point over that stretch en route to establishing a 10-point advantage.
Overall, the Badgers went on a 13-2 run over the first 7:21 of the second half.
"In the second half we go 1.37 on points per possession because we touch the post better," Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan told the Journal-Sentinel. "Sometimes, you have to get smacked, figuratively, to understand what we need to do with the ball and some things we could have done a little bit better. But it's a 40-minute game, so we've got to correct it in the second half."
The Wildcats could get no closer than eight points the remainder of the way.
Landry's scoring explosion was two better than the 19 he had against Eastern Kentucky on November 19, 2005. He was 4-for-4 in the second half - making 6-of-7 shots overall - and 9-of-10 attempts from the free-throw line.
"They were giving up something to allow him to be open, meaning they were stretching on a couple of other guys and looking to double," Ryan told the paper. "That's where good ball movement can find a guy like that."
Michael Thompson scored 16 points to pace Northwestern (6-9, 0-5), which lost for the fifth time in its last six contests and was held to a season-low point total.
