Slumping Texas A&M faces surging Baylor in Big 12 tilt

Jan 23, 2008 - 2:40 PM Baylor (15-2) at No. 16 Texas A&M (15-3) 8:00 pm EST

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (Ticker) - No. 16 Texas A&M attempts to avoid a third straight loss when it takes on an improving Baylor team in a Big 12 Conference matchup Wednesday.

The Aggies (15-3, 1-2 Big 12) are coming off consecutive blowout losses, including a 75-54 defeat to Kansas State on Saturday.

But Texas A&M is 13-0 at home this season and has won six consecutive games against the Bears (15-2, 3-0).

The Bears, who have already matched last season's win total, are off to their best start since the 1945-46 team began 24-2. They also are 3-0 in Big 12 play for the first time since starting 5-0 on 1997-98.

"They should be unbelievably confident coming in," Aggies coach Mark Turgeon said. "You got two different animals coming into this game. They had a road win against Nebraska, and they won their two (Big 12) home games and have had a heckuva year so they should be confident coming in."

The Bears' 72-70 win at Nebraska on Saturday ended a 25-game road conference losing streak. It was Baylor's first conference road victory since beating Texas A&M, 67-61, in overtime on February 25, 2004.

Junior swingman Josh Carter averages 13.4 points for the Aggies. Senior swingman Joseph Jones adds 11.3 points per contest.

The Aggies lead the series, 124-71. The last five meetings have been decided by 10 points or fewers.
