Stanford avenges loss to Oregon

Feb 8, 2008 - 7:15 AM PALO ALTO, California (Ticker) -- Stanford got even with Oregon - and then some.

Robin Lopez scored 15 points to lead the ninth-ranked Cardinal to a 72-43 drubbing of the Ducks in a Pac-10 Conference mismatch Thursday night.

Lawrence Hill added 13 points and Brook Lopez had 12 and five blocked shots as Stanford (19-3, 8-2 Pac-10) extended its winning streak to six games and avenged a 71-66 loss to Oregon on January 13.

The Cardinal have not lost since that meeting with the Ducks and have climbed into the top 10 in the national rankings for the first time since the 2002-03 season.

Oregon (13-9, 4-6), conversely, has lost five of its last six games since beating Stanford and never had a chance Thursday night due to a woeful shooting performance and the inside muscle of the 7-foot Lopez twins, who also combined for 13 rebounds.

The Cardinal came out sizzling, making 8-of-10 shots to take a 19-11 lead on a 3-pointer by Drew Shiller.

That basket triggered an 11-0 run that was fueled by six straight points from Robin Lopez to give Stanford a 27-11 lead just past the midway point of the first half.

The closest the Ducks got thereafter was within 35-23 on three free throws by Tajuan Porter with 1:37 left in the opening half.

Free-throw shooting was the only bright spot in the first half for Oregon, which went 9-of-9 from the stripe, but that couldn't offset 24 percent shooting (6-of-25) from the floor.

A layup by Maarty Leunen with 17:55 to play in the game cut Oregon's deficit to 37-25 before Hill broke the game open with a pair of 3-pointers and a free throw during an 11-2 run to stretch the advantage to 48-27 with 13:49 to play.

Hill buried four 3-pointers, helping Stanford finish 9-of-21 from the arc.

The Cardinal continued to pull away and opened a lead of 30 points (63-33) on Taj Finger's 3-point play with 5:40 left.

Porter scored 12 points to lead Oregon, which shot a miserable 29 percent (14-of-48) from the floor, including 4-of-18 from the arc.

Stanford, which committed just nine turnovers in the contest, held a dominating 40-28 advantage on the glass and held a 20-8 edge in second-chance points.
