Nebraska pulls out second straight upset, downs Texas A&M

Feb 24, 2008 - 2:47 AM COLLEGE STATION, Texas (Ticker) -- While Nebraska has a long way to go to become known as a significant threat, it is doing what it can to cause some ripples in the Big 12 Conference.

Sek Henry scored 11 points, including a pair of crucial late 3-pointers, as Nebraska registered a 65-59 upset victory over No. 22 Texas A&M on Saturday.

After struggling for most of its conference schedule, Nebraska (16-9, 5-7) has registered consecutive wins over ranked opponents, defeating No. 25 Kansas State on Wednesday as well as winning on Saturday to improve to 3-3 against top-25 teams this season.

Nebraska won consecutive games over ranked teams for the first time since 1999. It was also Nebraska's first road victory over a Top 25 team since beating Kansas in Lawrence on January 24, 1999.

Having led the entire game, Nebraska fell behind at 53-50 with 4:16 remaining when Donald Sloan nailed a 3-pointer from the right corner. Henry responded with his own shot from the arc to knot the contest at 53-53.

Each team traded baskets to get to 57-57 before Henry hit another 3-pointer from the right wing to put the Cornhuskers in the lead for good with 1:24 remaining.

"You know they will make runs at you and they made about four big runs and we were able to fight them off," Nebraska coach Doc Sadler said.

Jay-R Strowbridge and Steve Harley hit five free throws down the stretch for Nebraska, which also grabbed two offensive rebounds in the final 35 seconds to hold on.

Conversely, Texas A&M (20-7, 6-6) missed all three of its 3-point attempts over the final 61 seconds, getting just a two-point basket from Derrick Roland to account for the final margin.

Harley scored 11 points and Aleks Maric added 10 for the Cornhuskers, who posted their first win against the Aggies since the 2004-05 season.

Maric, who posted 15 points and 17 rebounds in Wednesday's win, saw his consecutive double-double streak end at seven games.

Nebraska, which was shooting just 38 percent from the field and scoring 57.3 points per game on the road this season, shot 59 percent (23-of-39) for the contest.

The shooting effort was the Huskers' best performance in conference play this year and their second straight game shooting over 50 percent. Texas A&M shot 42 percent (20-of-48) from the field.

"We've got to start playing smart again," Texas A&M coach Mark Turgeon said. "The point guard position has to get better. We can't get the guys into the offense and our decision making was bad. I never thought that we were going to lose that game. They just hit more shots down the stretch."

Roland finished with 13 points for Texas A&M, which fell to 15-3 at home this season.
