Texas Tech jolts No. 5 Texas

Mar 2, 2008 - 4:08 AM LUBBOCK, Texas (Ticker) -- Texas' drive toward a conference championship hit a bump in the road.

Alan Voskuil scored 18 points, including six free throws in the final 32 seconds, as Texas Tech upset the fifth-ranked Longhorns, 83-80, in the Big 12 Conference on Saturday.

Martin Zeno added 15 points and Charlie Burgess and Trevor Cook had 14 apiece as the Red Raiders snapped the eight-game winning streak of Texas (24-5, 11-3 Big 12).

It was a bit of redemption for Texas Tech, which was embarrassed at Texas A&M, 98-54, on Wednesday. So coach Pat Knight decided to turn up the heat on both his team and Texas.

"We wanted to push it on them, we weren't going to back down or try to slow it up," Pat Knight said. "I wasn't worried about making one, two, three passes; if you're open just shoot."

D.J. Augustin led a spirited comeback with 30 points for the Longhorns, who entered Saturday with a one-game lead over Kansas for first place in the conference. The Jayhawks tied Texas for the conference lead with an 88-74 victory over rival Kansas State later Saturday.

"They came at us, it was aggressive offensively and defensively," Augustin said. "Our shots wasn't falling and we didn't come out with the same intensity as we always come out with."

Texas Tech (16-12, 7-7) took control of the game with a 26-7 run spanning halftime to grab a 56-43 advantage on Cook's three-point play with 11:03 to play.

The Red Raiders built the lead to as many as 14 points (70-56) with 3:25 to play, hitting 11 consecutive free throws at one point.

Suddenly, however, Texas Tech went cold from the stripe as Texas was forced to foul. The Red Raiders converted just 3-of-8 at the stripe, allowing the Longhorns to whittle the lead to two points on three occasions behind a 3-pointer from A.J. Abrams and six consecutive points from Augustin.

Justin Mason buried a rainbow 3-pointer from the left corner to cut the deficit to 81-80, but Voskuil nailed two free throws with 7.9 seconds left to make it 83-80.

Augustin was intentionally fouled on the subsequent possession, but missed the first free throw. The rebound deflected out to teammate D.J. Lewis, who was well short on a tying 3-point attempt.

"We got beat. I mean, I can't be any more specific," Texas coach Rick Barnes said. "Texas Tech beat us today. I don't want anyone to think it is anything but that."

Abrams had 14 points and Mason 13 for Texas, which had beaten the Red Raiders in 19 of the past 21 meetings.

"If you don't play hard enough to win, you're not entitled to win. And we didn't do what we had to do today," Barnes said.
