North Carolina one win away from another ACC title game

Mar 15, 2008 - 1:35 PM Virginia Tech (19-12) vs. No. 1 North Carolina (30-2) 1:30 pm EDT

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) - A visit to the past may be all No. 1 North Carolina needs to move onto another conference tournament championship game.

The top-seeded Tar Heels will target their second straight title game on Saturday when they meet fourth-seeded Virginia Tech in an Atlantic Coast Conference tournament semifinal game.

A win would put North Carolina - the defending tournament champions - in its conference-record 29th ACC championship game. It has won the title 16 times.

On February 16, the Tar Heels dismantled the Hokies, 92-53, in Chapel Hill. The 39-point win tied for the most lopsided win by any team in ACC play this season. North Carolina held the Hokies to 26 percent shooting and outrebounded them, 54-24.

The Tar Heels had a much more difficult time on Friday, getting 22 points from Tyler Hansbrough in a 82-70 win over Florida State in the quarterfinals.

Even though Virginia Tech - which downed Miami 63-49 in Friday's quarterfinals - is the conference's stingiest defense at 65.2 points per game, it will likely have to shed its low-scoring ways to keep up with the Tar Heels.

Virginia Tech is second to last in scoring offense with 69.5 points per game while North Carolina averages a lofty 89.7.

Freshman guard Malcolm Delaney and junior guard A.D. Vassallo each scored 15 points in the quarterfinal victory.
