Abrams, Texas should feel at home vs. Stanford

Mar 28, 2008 - 2:11 PM No. 3 Stanford (28-7) vs. No. 2 Texas (30-6) 7:27 pm EDT

HOUSTON (Ticker) - A.J. Abrams and No. 2 seed Texas will be playing in front a large contingent of fans on Friday when they face off against third-seeded Stanford in the South Regional semifinal of the NCAA Tournament.

The Longhorns (30-6) advanced to the "Sweet 16" with a 75-72 win over Miami on Sunday.

Abrams scored 26 points as the Longhorns, who have already set the school record for wins, advanced to their fifth regional semifinal in the last seven years.

It did not come easy though, as Miami rallied from a 17-point deficit. D.J. Augustin then provided some tense moments, as the star point guard airballed the first free throw and hit the second for the final margin.

Now the Longhorns are headed to Houston, which is about a three hour drive from their campus in Austin.

"We're excited about going to Houston," Augustin said. "We been through those kind of games before. It prepared us for (Sunday), and they was a great team. We knew they were going to come back and fight back. We had to withstand that."

Texas, which is 6-0 in NCAA Tournament games in Texas since 2002, will have to get past the Cardinal to continue its pursuit of a trip to San Antonio for the Final Four. Stanford has an imposing front court led by the 7-foot Lopez twins. Brook Lopez made a baseline leaner with 1.3 seconds left to give the Cardinal a 82-81 win over sixth-seeded Marquette on Saturday.

Robin Lopez added 18 as Stanford advanced to the regional semifinal for the first time since 2001.

The winner will meet either top-seeded Memphis or No. 5 seed Michigan State on Sunday in the regional final.
