No. 23 Georgia Tech blast Jackson State
Nov 14, 2006 - 2:25 AM ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Georgia Tech wasted little time taking care of business.Lewis Clinch scored 16 points and Thaddeus Young and Zach Peacock added 14 apiece as the 23rd-ranked Yellow Jackets breezed to a 100-70 victory over Jackson State in a non-conference matchup.
The Yellow Jackets opened the game on a 22-10 run with Peacock netting nine points in the surge. The 6-8 freshmen shot 4-of-6 and made 6-of-8 foul shots.
"As he (Peacock) gets more comfortable offensively, I think that's what he can put up double figures," Tech coach Paul Hewitt said. "Zach is playing great defense, and I'm looking forward to him getting comfortable offensively."
Young drained a 3-pointer and Clinch scored on an easy jam to help Georgia Tech extend its lead to 37-16 with just over nine minutes remaining in the first half.
Behind an impressive 69 percent (22-of-32) shooting, Georgia Tech (2-0) held a 54-31 advantage at intermission and cruised thereafter.
"This time of year, you're always trying to improve on things. I liked our effort," Hewitt said. "I thought we did a good job. I thought the effort was very good. There are some things we can execute better, obviously, but considering the time of year, I was pleased."
Javaris Crittenton collected 12 points and 10 assists for the Yellow Jackets, who shot 65 percent (39-of-60) overall and scored 22 points off 23 turnovers.
"Javaris is playing well. He's a young man who's got a lot of pride and wants to be a good player, so he's going to keep working hard," Hewitt said. "There are some things he can work on, but as long as he plays as hard as he normally does, he's going to keep getting better."
Trey Johnson scored 33 points and Julius Young chipped in 14 for Jackson State (0-2), which shot 39 percent (24-of-61). Johnson, who is the reigning Southwestern Athletic Conference Player of the Year, had a 36-point outburst in a season-opening loss at Alabama.
