Dyson scores 20 as UConn routs Central Arkansas
Nov 18, 2006 - 3:23 AM STORRS, Connecticut (Ticker) -- There was no repeat performance by Jerome Dyson and Connecticut. The freshman guard scored 20 points and Jeff Adrien posted a double-double as the No. 19 Huskies rolled to an 88-59 victory over Central Arkansas.
Stanley Robinson added 13 points off the bench for Connecticut (2-0), which posted an unimpressive 53-46 victory over Quinnipiac in its season opener.
"We have struggled, but in the second half we kind of took off," Huskies coach Jim Calhoun said. "The fast break really was very effective for us. I would have to rate this as a step forward because of what we talked about - confidence, stepping-up and trying to make shots.
"Overall, I think it was a step forward for us. Is it a big step? No. Does it cure all of the ills that we have as a team? No. It's a long way from the way I want us to eventually play, but we're looking for steps forward."
Dyson, who scored a team-high 16 points against Quinnipiac, scored 14 as the Huskies opened a 44-28 lead at halftime.
"They have excellent quickness in the backcourt, just big time quickness with the guards," Central Arkansas coach Rand Chappell said. "We're seeing 6-2, 6-3, when we've been used to seeing 5-10 and 11. The big guys move well, too."
The Huskies spotted the Bears the game's initial hoop before reeling off the next 10 points. Central Arkansas inched to within 14-9, but the Huskies responded with a 12-0 run for a 26-9 lead. Dyson had five points, and freshman Doug Wiggins four in the spurt. The Bears got no closer than 16 the rest of the way.
"We had great intensity to start off. Our defense was there again as it has been," Dyson said. "We were able to get our offense going so everything looked like it was going good. And it turned out for a good win for us."
Dyson finished 7-of-13 from the floor, including 3-of-5 from the arc and several fast-break dunks.
"I'm feeling real good. Most of my shots are just real open shots," Dyson said. "It's not much of a problem. I'm getting wide-open shots and I'm just making them. Getting to the basket is helping me a lot also."
Adrien had 14 points on 6-of-12 shooting and added 11 boards.
A.J. Price had 12 points and eight assists for Connecticut, which shot 50 percent (32-of-64) and held a 43-32 edge on the boards.
Frederick Campbell had 15 points for Central Arkansas (1-2), which sot 36 percent (21-of-59) and committed 18 turnovers.
