Law leads No. 12 Texas A&M past Louisiana Tech

Nov 19, 2006 - 4:02 AM COLLEGE STATION, Texas (Ticker) -- Acie Law displayed his shooting touch against Louisiana Tech.

Law scored a season-high 21 points and Joseph Jones added 19 and seven rebounds for 12th-ranked Texas A&M in a 75-59 triumph over the Bulldogs in the Shelby Metcalf Classic.

A 6-3 senior, Law made 8-of-10 shots, including 2-of-3 from 3-point range. His shot from the arc with 46 seconds left in the first half gave the Aggies (3-0) a 36-28 advantage at intermission.

"My teammates have done a good job finding me, I just haven't been producing," Law said. "I haven't really been practicing well and it has started transferring over into games. My teammates need me to produce and I have to become more assertive and try to get a bucket. As a basketball player, you have to be ready to compete for 40 minutes."

Louisiana Tech cut the deficit to 38-36 just three minutes into the second half but it would get no closer as Texas A&M responded with an impressive 18-3 burst capped by Bryan Davis' layup at the 9:35 mark that made it 56-39.

Antanas Kavaliauskas found Law, who scored on an easy basket with 3:33 remaining as the Aggies pushed the lead to a 20-point edge and never looked back.

"That was a good win. It looked bleak there for a while but maybe that's what we needed," Aggies coach Billy Gillispie said. "You have to give Louisiana Tech credit. They played hard and they are very athletic. These guys are playing hard and trying hard, we're just not very good yet.

"I wasn't really pleased with the offense. We didn't drive enough and didn't get the ball to the post enough. We are doing fine for right now but we will always strive for more."

Josh Carter had 12 points and six assists for Texas A&M, which shot a season-best 54 percent (27-of-50) and scored 34 points in the paint.

Marcus Elliott scored 17 points and Chad McKenzie chipped in 12 for the Bulldogs (0-2), who shot 34 percent (17-of-49).

"We wanted to get better looks offensively and that's hard to do against a top 10 defense," Louisiana Tech coach Keith Richard said. "We wanted to work on our press and use our quickness to make up for our lack of size. Texas A&M's size inside was really the difference."
