Pondexter, Washington defeat Sacramento State

Nov 19, 2006 - 11:35 PM SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Quincy Pondexter wanted to show Washington Huskies fans there is more than one outstanding freshman on the squad.

Pondexter had 22 points and nine rebounds and Jon Brockman added 13 and nine as No. 15 Washington posted an 83-74 victory over Sacramento State.

Pondexter shot 6-of-11 from the field and 8-of-11 on free throws while fellow freshman, 2006 McDonald's All-American Spencer Hawes, added 14 points for the Huskies, who shot 54 percent (32-of-59) from the field.

"Pondexter had a very good all-around basketball game," Washington coach Lorenzo Romar said. "I think he understands his strengths. It is no coincidence that he went to the line eight times. Guys that stand around the perimeter and shoot threes a lot don't get to the line, and Quincy gets to the foul line."

A 6-6 forward, Pondexter came into Sunday's game as the team's third-leading scorer behind the 7-0 Hawes, who is considered the best player ever recruited by Washington. Hawes was 7-of-7 from the floor and has scored in double figures in three of his first four games.

The Huskies (4-0) have won 18 straight non-conference games and are now 2-0 all-time vs. the Hornets.

"We won a game and we've got to prepare ourselves so that the next time we play we are a little bit better," Romar said.

Alex Bausley scored 19 points and hauled in eight rebounds and Loren Leath added 17 for Sacramento State, which shot just 35 percent (29-of-82) and an abysmal 4-of-21 from 3-point range.

"I think Bausley is a stud, I think that he can play at this level," Sacramento State coach Jerome Jenkins said. "I would take Bausley anywhere, Michigan or Stanford, I would take him everywhere. He plays big everywhere he goes."

"The effort was great, but we still have a lot of things to work on," Jenkins added. "We are working on some things right now, but I was very pleased with our effort."

Haron Hargrave, who scored a career-high 31 points and hit a school-record eight 3-pointers in a 74-53 win Friday vs. Denver, had just seven points, going 0-of-3 from the arc.

The contest finished under strange conditions as the clock buzzer rang continuously for the final four minutes. The officials deliberated with both coaches when the problem first arose, deciding to play through the annoying sound.
