Freshman Summers lifts Georgetown over Fairfield

Nov 23, 2006 - 3:31 AM BRIDGEPORT, Connecticut (Ticker) -- It took DeJuan Summers and Georgetown one half to get over their first loss of the season.

The freshman forward scored 11 of his season-high 17 points in the second half as the No. 16 Hoyas overcame some inconsistent play to down a pesky Fairfield squad with a 73-60 victory.

Georgetown (3-1) was playing for the first time since a disappointing 75-62 setback to Old Dominion on Sunday. The upset snapped the Hoyas' 23-game winning streak at McDonough Arena, its on-campus gymnasium.

The Big East team appeared to still be reeling from that loss in the first half, committing nine turnovers to allow the Stags (1-6) to trail only 34-30 at the half.

Summers, who was making his first career start, got Georgetown off on the right foot after intermission, hitting a layup and adding a 3-pointer after a shot from the arc by Jeff Green to make it 42-30 with 18:05 remaining.

A 6-8 forward who finished 6-for-10 from the field, Summers added another jumper about a minute later to start a 9-0 run. Jonathan Wallace's 3-pointer capped the burst for a 51-32 advantage with 12:58 to play.

In all, it was a 17-2 spurt to begin the final 20 minutes for the Hoyas, who rolled from there to record their 14th win in 18 all-time meetings with the Stags. Georgetown has won the last four in the series.

Jessie Sapp scored 14 points and Roy Hibbert added nine and six blocks for the Hoyas, who shot 56 percent (14-of-25) and committed just five turnovers in the second half.

A 7-2 junior, Hibbert took only five shots and played in only 21 minutes as Georgetown coach John Thompson III opted to go with a smaller lineup for most of the contest, thinking more about the team's future than present.

"I thought we were better smaller today," Thompson said. "Once we get experience, I think we can be a multi-dimensional team. Hopefully, we'll be able to play fast, play slow, be big, be small. I just thought we were better off small today."

Mike Van Schaick scored 14 points for Fairfield, which was outrebounded, 23-18.

Danny Oglesby had 13 points off the bench for the Stags, whose starting five was outscored by the Hoyas' by a 57-29 margin.
