Fazekas keeps Nevada unbeaten

Nov 26, 2006 - 5:13 AM SANTA CLARA, California (Ticker) -- Nick Fazekas can help Nevada overcome a lot of obstacles.

Fazekas registered his fifth double-double in as many games, scoring 28 points and grabbing 15 rebounds to lead the 20th-ranked Wolf Pack to a 78-70 victory over Santa Clara.

Nevada (5-0) registered its first win at Santa Clara since December 15, 1980, and it marked the team's seventh straight road victory.

The two-time reigning Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year, the 6-11 Fazekas is averaging 25.4 points and 14.8 rebounds. Earlier this season, he became the school's all-time leading scorer and is looking to lead the Wolf Pack to their fourth straight WAC regular-season title.

The Broncos (2-2), who were coming off a 73-48 drubbing against California, might have sensed it wasn't their night when they made their first seven shots from the floor and held just a 15-13 lead.

There were eight lead changes and five ties in the opening 20 minutes as both teams shot over 50 percent.

Fazekas started to take over the game in the second half. He scored seven points in a 9-0 run that gave Nevada its biggest lead, 60-48, with 10:53 to play.

Sean Denison scored 10 points to help Santa Clara slowly whittle the deficit, and when Danny Pariseau hit a 3-pointer with 2:07 left, the margin was down to 74-70.

The Broncos had three chances to get within a point but missed three straight shots from the arc.

Fazekas, who made 12-of-19 shots from the floor, pulled down his 15th rebound off a miss by Pariseau and JaVale McGee dunked at the other end for a 76-70 advantage with 20 seconds left.

Ramon Sessions scored 14 points and Marcelus Kemp added 11 for the Wolf Pack.

Denison scored 23 points on 10-of-12 shooting for the Broncos.
