Michigan State opens season with high hopes

Nov 16, 2008 - 7:04 AM Idaho (1-0) at No. 7 Michigan State, 6:00 p.m. EST

EAST LANSING, Michigan (Ticker) -- Seventh-ranked Michigan State hopes to put last season's lopsided NCAA Tournament loss behind them when it opens its season against Idaho on Sunday.

The Spartans return four starters from last season's 27-9 squad that was blown out, 92-74, by Memphis in the regional semifinals. Michigan State was down by 30 at the half.

Junior forward Raymar Morgan is back to lead Michigan State, which is expected to contend for the Big Ten Conference title with Purdue and possibly make a deep run in the NCAAs. Morgan averaged 14.0 points 6.1 rebounds last season.

Sophomore point guard Kalin Lucas and senior center Goran Suton also return for the Spartans, who have not lost a home opener since 1976.

The Vandals (1-0) of the Western Athletic Conference should not threaten to break that streak.

Idaho cruised in its season opener on Friday, defeating Evergreen State, 91-69. Mac Hopson scored 19 points to lead four players in double figures.
