Wisconsin opens another season with Tournament aspirations

Nov 16, 2008 - 7:06 AM Long Beach State (1-0) at No. 21 Wisconsin, 4:00 p.m. EST

MADISON, Wisconsin (Ticker) -- One of the most consistent teams over the past decade, No. 21 Wisconsin opens the new campaign on Sunday when it hosts Long Beach State.

The Badgers lose last season's leading scorer but return three starters from a 31-5 squad that won the Big Ten Conference championship and reached the regional semifinals. It was the Badgers' 10th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance.

Junior guard Trevon Hughes made large strides last season, averaging 11.2 points and senior forwards Marcus Landry and Joe Krabbenhoft provide leadership and grit in the paint.

The 49ers, who are coming off a 6-25 campaign, dropped their opener, 75-65, at Brigham Young on Friday.

Long Beach State held a seven-point lead at the break but could not hold on during the second half. Senior guard Donovan Morris led the team with 13 points.

Wisconsin's defense allowed less than 60 points 26 times in its 36 contests last season.
