Without Hansbrough, UNC hosts Kentucky

Nov 18, 2008 - 3:26 PM Kentucky (0-1) at No. 1 North Carolina (1-0), 9:00 p.m. EST

CHAPEL HILL, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Top-ranked North Carolina is still without its top player. The way Kentucky played in its opener, that may not matter.

The Tar Heels look to improve to 2-0 when they host the Wildcats in a matchup of college basketball's winningest programs on Tuesday.

North Carolina won its season opener, 86-71, against Pennsylvania on Saturday as Tyler Hansbrough sat out with a stress reaction in his right shin.

The consensus National Player of the Year last season, Hansbrough will miss Tuesday's contest and it's uncertain if the senior will play Friday at UC Santa Barbara or in next week's Maui Invitational.

Without their best player, freshman Tyler Zeller scored 18 points and Deon Thompson had 17 and seven rebounds to pace the Tar Heels.

Kentucky is coming off an embarrassing 111-103 setback to Virginia Military on Friday.

Jodie Meeks scored a career-high 39 points and Perry Stevenson had 20 and 14 rebounds for the Wildcats, who allowed 14 3-pointers.

North Carolina has won the last four meetings, including an 86-77 victory at Kentucky last season.

The Wildcats are the all-time NCAA leader in wins with 1,966, while the Tar Heels have 1,951.
