Michigan State eyes 2-0 start against IPFW

Nov 19, 2008 - 11:19 AM No. 7 Michigan State (1-0) at IPFW (0-1) 7:00 p.m. EST

Michigan State has lofty expectations. A meeting with an unknown team should not derail those hopes.

The seventh-ranked Spartans look to start their campaign with back-to-back wins when they visit Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne on Wednesday.

Raymar Morgan and Chris Allen scored 21 points apiece as Michigan State cruised past Idaho, 100-62, in its season opener on Sunday.

Kalin Lucas added 13 points and nine assists for the Spartans, who shot 11-of-20 from 3-point range and sank 60 percent of their field goal attempts (34-of-57), cruising to a 25-point halftime lead.

After suffering a blowout loss to Memphis in a regional semifinal last season that saw it trail by 30 at the half, Michigan State returns four starters, led by Morgan.

The 6-8 junior swingman, who averaged 14.0 points and 6.1 rebounds a season ago while being named to the All-Big Ten second team, shot 7-of-9 from the field and 6-of-9 from the free-throw line to lead the Spartans against an overmatched Idaho squad.

It should be more of the same from Morgan and the Spartans against IPFW, which suffered a 71-43 drubbing against Xavier during its season opener on Friday.

Freshman Trey McCorkle led the Mastodons with 10 points while Deilvez Yearby added nine points and four rebounds.
