Curry has another big effort in Davidson win

Nov 22, 2008 - 7:13 AM DAVIDSON, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Stephen Curry could always shoot. It is his ability to pass the ball that is currently turning some heads.

Curry scored 30 points and handed out a career-high 13 assists as No. 21 Davidson bounced back from its first loss with a 97-70 victory over Winthrop on Friday.

Andrew Lovedale added a career-high 20 points and 15 rebounds for the Wildcats (3-1), who shot 49 percent (33-of-67) from the field.

It was the third straight game with at least 30 points for the junior sharpshooter Curry, who netted a career-high 44 in Tuesday's 82-78 loss at No. 14 Oklahoma, which snapped Davidson's 21-game regular-season winning streak.

The son of former NBA shooter Dell Curry finished 8-of-16 from the field, including 5-of-12 on 3-pointers. Curry has at least five baskets from the arc in each of his last two games, and is shooting 43 percent (18-of-42) from long range on the season.

Curry's play as a distributor was equally impressive, as he continues to adjust to his new role as the point guard. He committed just three turnovers while reaching double digits in assists for the second time.

So far, the 6-2 guard has handed out 35 assists against 11 turnovers.

It was the fourth career double-double for Curry, and the second this season.

The Wildcats, who got a combined 32 points from Curry and Lovedale in the first half, blew open the game with a 14-3 run following intermission.

Stephen Rossiter had seven points during that run, including a three-point play that made it 50-37 with 16:54 remaining. The junior forward finished with 13 points for Davidson, which entered the game with no one else averaging double-digits other than Curry and Lovedale.

The Eagles did close within 55-43 following a three-point play by Andre Jones with 14:32 remaining. But a 16-4 run gave the Wildcats a 79-52 advantage after Curry netted his last 3-pointer with 6:43 to play.

Will Archambault had 12 points and Bryant Barr chipped in 11 for the Wildcats, who finished with five players in double figures for the second time this season.

Lovedale pulled down six offensive rebounds and Rossiter and Archambault grabbed six boards apiece for Davidson, which ended up with a 41-32 advantage on the boards.

Cameron Stanley had a career-high 20 points for Winthrop (1-3), which struggled from long range, going 2-of-13 on 3-pointers.

Mantoris Robinson added 10 points for the Eagles, who committed 17 turnovers, leading to 22 points for the Wildcats.
