Wisconsin survives Iona's upset bid

Nov 22, 2008 - 5:48 AM ST. THOMAS, Virgin Islands (Ticker) -- Wisconsin's trip to the Virgin Islands was no day at the beach as the 21st-ranked Badgers survived an upset bid by Iona, 60-58, in overtime on Friday in the Paradise Jam Tournament.

Trevon Hughes scored 22 points as Wisconsin survived despite hitting only 15-of-48 shots (31 percent) from the field.

"That was a knock-em down, drag-em out, bring the next guy in game," Badgers coach Bo Ryan said.

Defense dominated the overtime. After the Badgers (3-0) scored the first four points of the extra session, Jermel Jenkins hit a 3-pointer to bring the Gaels within one point.

The teams then missed shots until Trevon Hughes sank an off-balance shot to put the Badgers up, 58-55, with less than a minute left.

Jason Bohannon then hit a pair of foul shots, but Rashon Dwight drove the lane, hit a layup and was fouled. The free throw left Wisconsin with a 60-58 lead. It was Dwight's first points and the last points of the game.

The Gaels had a chance to tie or win at the end of the game, but Marcus Landry poked the ball away on their last-ditch attempt.

"That was a great play," Ryan said.

The Badgers next will play San Diego, which beat Valparaiso, on Sunday.

Hughes went 6-of-10 from the field and 10-of-11 from the foul line.

Iona was led by Gary Springer and Jonathan Huffman with 12 points apiece.

Springer hit a layup with 1:11 left in regulation to give the Gaels (1-1) a 52-50 advantage.

Landry put home his own miss with less than 40 seconds left to tie the game at 52-52.

Dwight then missed a shot with 16 seconds left, but Iona grabbed the offensive board. Huffman missed a last-gasp 3-point shot and the game went to overtime.
