Wisconsin takes on upset-minded San Diego

Nov 23, 2008 - 7:41 AM San Diego (2-1) at (22) Wisconsin (3-0) 8:30 p.m. EST

MADISON, Wisconsin (Ticker) -- Wisconsin survived in the first round of the Paradise Jam Tournament and will look to avoid another upset bid when it faces San Diego on Sunday.

The 22nd-ranked Badgers needed overtime to beat Iona, 60-58, on Friday. Trevon Hughes scored 22 points as Wisconsin escaped despite hitting only 15-of-48 shots (31 percent) from the field.

Iona's bid for the upset came up short when Marcus Landry poked the ball away on the Gaels' last-ditch attempt. If the Badgers hope to advance to the final against either Miami or Connecticut, they will need to improve on the offensive end.

Wisconsin knocked down 25-of-34 from the free-throw line and grabbed 13 offensive rebounds to overcome the poor shooting performance.

San Diego knows a thing or two about upsets, returning all five starters from a squad that beat No. 4 seeded Connecticut in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last season.

Gyno Pomare score 13 of his 17 points in the second half and added 12 rebounds to lead the Toreros to a 73-66 victory over Valparaiso on Friday. Brandon Johnson added 14 and eight despite shooting just 3-of-11 from the field. He knocked down 8-of-10 from the free-throw line as San Diego went 25-of-37 as a team.

The Toreros held a 47-28 advantage on the boards and held the Crusaders to 22-of-54 (41 percent) from the field.
