Texas takes on St. Joe's in Maui opener

Nov 24, 2008 - 5:48 PM Saint Joseph"s (PA) (1-1) at (7) Texas (2-0) 3:00 pm EST

MAUI, Hawaii (Ticker) -- Seventh-ranked Texas opens play at the Maui Invitational in a first-round matchup with Saint Joseph's (PA) on Monday.

The Longhorns opened the season with a pair of home wins over Stetson and Tulane, but figure to eventually face some stiff competition in Hawaii.

Senior A.J. Abrams has led the scoring charge early on, averaging 18 points a game while sinking 8-of-17 from behind the arc. Junior swingman Damion James has contributed 14.5 points and 7.5 rebounds in the first two contests.

If Texas advances past the Hawks, they face a likely matchup with No. 9 Notre Dame in the semifinals before a potential meeting with No. 1 North Carolina in the championship.

St. Joseph's won its season opener, 69-57, over Rider, but followed it up with a 73-69 loss in overtime at Holy Cross last Sunday. The Hawks were outrebounded 44-33 and made just 2-of-6 field goal attempts in the extra session.

Senior Ahmad Nivins has posted a pair of double-doubles to open the season while converting 15-of-18 from the field.

The Hawks are making their first appearance in the Maui Invitational.
