Davidson rolls despite Curry going scoreless

Nov 26, 2008 - 6:39 AM DAVIDSON, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Somehow, Loyola, Maryland coach Jimmy Patsos believes he won the battle even though he lost the war.

Davidson's Stephen Curry was held scoreless for the first time in his career, but the Wildcats still won by 30.

Twenty-fifth-ranked Davidson had no problem with Loyola, Maryland on Tuesday, rolling to a 78-48 victory, despite their star guard failing to score.

The Greyhounds decided to double-team Curry and he was content to stay away from the action, drawing two men to him all the time. While Curry received all the attention, Davidson (5-1) thrived in what basically was a 4-on-3 game.

"I know the fans are mad at me, but I had to roll the dice." Patsos said. "We scored 48 points and that's the problem that Loyola basketball had today. We have to play better. We can't afford to have 21 turnovers."

Curry finished 0-for-3 from the field with three assists and three rebounds in 32 minutes. Curry's previous low was five points against Duke in November of 2006. He came into the game having scored no less than 29 points in Davidson's first five games this season.

"I had the best seat in the house," Curry told FoxSports.com. "I felt like I was dreaming It was the weirdest thing ever."

Andrew Lovedale had 15 of his 20 points before intermission. Bryant Barr added 12 of his 18 and Will Archambault had 10 of his 13 prior to intermission as the Wildcats surged to a 39-17 lead while hitting 15-of-28 (54 percent) from the field.

The Greyhounds (2-4), meanwhile, couldn't hit anything, connecting on 7-of-26 shots (27 percent) in the first 20 minutes.

Marquis Sullivan led Loyola with 16 points and went over the 1,000-point mark for his career.

Curry, who came in averaging 35 points per game, picked up a couple of quick fouls. Still, Patsos kept the double-team on the sharpshooter.

"I've never seen anything like it," Davidson coach Bob McKillop told the web site. "From the time the ball entered the court, there were two guys on him and they didn't leave him the entire game."

Any mystery to the outcome of this game was erased early. The Greyhounds took a quick 9-4 advantage only to see the Wildcats rip off 18 straight points.

"He told me that he wanted to stay in the corner with the two guys and we could play 4-on-3," McKillop told FoxSports.com. "He said we'll just dice them up."

"That was the best way to attack it and get a win," Curry concluded to the web site.
