Wisconsin thumps Wisconsin-Milwaukee again

Nov 29, 2008 - 8:32 PM MADISON, Wisconsin (Ticker) -- Wisconsin handed intrastate rival Wisconsin-Milwaukee its annual beating Saturday.

Trevon Hughes led all scorers with 16 points and Joe Krabbenhoft posted his sixth career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds as the 19th-ranked Badgers cruised to a 67-46 victory over the Panthers at the Kohl Center.

It marked Wisconsin's 16th consecutive victory over the Panthers, whose only win in 26 all-time meetings came in 1992.

"We just ran our offense, you know, made the extra passes and getting open low," Hughes said. "We have unselfish people on this team, and sometimes too unselfish.

"But we got into the paint, drove and kicked it. We had shooters open, our big men making plays in the post and our shots followed."

The Badgers also improved to 8-0 against UW-Milwaukee under coach Bo Ryan, who said he thought the team played well with the lead.

"Especially in this part of the season (leads can get away), you look at teams and it's so erratic the shooting percentages from half to half let alone a game to game," he said.

The Panthers (3-4) did play the Badgers tight through the first 15 minutes and led 19-17 at one point, but saw the game get away when Wisconsin (5-1) closed the half with a 13-4 run to forge a 37-27 lead.

Jon Leuer had six of his nine points during the run, which was capped by Tim Jarmusz's 3-pointer in the closing seconds.

Things quickly got out of hand early in the second half as the Badgers opened with a 15-3 run to take a commanding 52-30 lead.

"I think the first 17 minutes of the game, we seemed to be doing the things that followed the game plan," UW-Milwaukee coach Rob Jeter said. "We seemed to be doing the things we were trying to accomplish. The last three minutes of the first half, which carried into the second half, was a dry spell."

Wisconsin, looking for a bounce-back game after suffering its first loss of the season to No. 2 Connecticut on Monday, held the Panthers to 36 percent (16-of-45) shooting.

"We talked about it in the locker room, we wanted to go out there and play hard and do those things and the score will take care of itself and that's what it did," Krabbenhoft said.

Marcus Landry also contributed 12 points for the Badgers, who sank 18-of-26 free throws while the Panthers took just 12 foul shots, converting 10.

The Badgers now turn their attention to a showdown with Virginia Tech on Monday in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge ahead of their annual clash with arch-rival and No. 15 Marquette next Saturday.

Deonte Roberts and Tony Meier each registered 11 points for UW-Milwaukee, which has dropped three straight.

It didn't help that the Panthers were without senior guard Ricky Franklin, who was suspended by the team following his arrest for operating a vehicle while intoxicated. Franklin had started all six games this season and was averaging 11.3 points.
