Davis, LSU power past McNeese State

Nov 30, 2006 - 3:33 AM BATON ROUGE, Louisiana (Ticker) -- Glen Davis and Louisiana State wanted to show McNeese State that their last game was an aberration.

Davis scored 15 points to lead five players in double figures as No. 12 LSU posted a 91-57 victory over McNeese State.

Garrett Temple scored 17 points and Tasmin Mitchell added 16 for the Tigers, who shot 53 percent (32-of-61) from the field.

LSU (3-1) was just 40 percent from the floor in its last game, a 57-53 loss to Wichita State on Saturday. In that contest, Davis had 17 points but committed six turnovers.

Against the Cowboys, however, the Tigers made 10-of-19 3-pointers. They also hit on 63 percent of their attempts in the second half to increase a 38-22 halftime lead to 34 points by the end of the game.

"I believe we are still a work in progress," LSU coach John Brady said. "I would like to see us make plays in the open floor better. I thought our team played better tonight than they did Saturday. We just need to continue to try and improve in every phase. I want more consistency in our shooting."

It was the second time LSU eclipsed the 90-point mark, and the third time it shot over 50 percent from the field this season.

Ben Voogd and Darnell Lazare added 12 and 11 points, respectively, for the Tigers, who have won 63 straight games at home vs. schools from the state of Louisiana.

"I thought Ben Voogd played well off the bench," Brady said. "I never told him not to shoot. He shoots pretty well when he gets his feet steady and he had a nice little drive to the goal tonight. Hopefully tonight's game will give him more confidence for when we play bigger opponents."

Aldrynn Wardell scored 16 points and John Ford added 13 for McNeese State (2-5), which shot just 28 percent (17-of-60) in falling to 0-16 all-time vs. LSU.

"They're big, they're strong, they're physical," McNeese State coach Dave Simmons said about the Tigers. "I thought we came in and took it to them early. We didn't get some shots to fall down. We got them in the paint and didn't get the calls. Anytime we had a roll going, they come down and hit a couple of threes that broke our back."
