After suffering first loss, Gonzaga faces Texas Southern

Dec 18, 2008 - 11:18 AM Texas Southern (0-9) at No. 7 Gonzaga (7-1) 9:00 p.m. EST

SPOKANE, Washington (Ticker) -- Seventh-ranked Gonzaga looks to bounce back from its first loss on Thursday when it takes on winless Texas Southern.

Gonzaga is among the top teams in the nation, displaying rare quality depth and playing as challenging a schedule as any team around.

However, after a seven-game win streak to start the campaign, the Bulldogs dropped a 69-64 decision to Arizona in the Desert Classic on Sunday.

Austin Daye matched a career high with 22 points and Matt Bouldin had 14 for Gonzaga, which shot 43 percent (24-of-56) from the field and failed to get contributions from its top players.

Josh Hetyvelt, the Bulldogs' leading scorer at 16.3 points entering the game, had just six points on 1-of-6 shooting. He did grab seven rebounds.

Another double-digit scorer, Jeremy Pargo managed just four points on 2-of-8 from the floor. He also had seven turnovers to go along with his seven assists.

Hetyvelt and Pargo should have little trouble returning to form against Texas Southern, which has struggled.

The Tigers have suffered three losses to start a season-high, six-game road trip, which began with an 80-61 setback against Arkansas on December 3.

Following a 36-point drubbing against Washington, Texas Southern endured an 88-72 loss to cross-state rival, then-No. 5 Texas on Tuesday.
