Michigan State looks to avoid letdown vs. Oakland

Dec 27, 2008 - 11:31 AM Oakland (8-6) vs. No. 18 Michigan State (8-2) 5:00 p.m. EST

Michigan State received a well-deserved week off following its big-time road victory over a highly ranked opponent last week.

The 18th-ranked Spartans take on in-state rival Oakland Saturday at the Palace of Auburn Hills before opening their Big Ten slate on New Year's Eve.

After flunking its first test in a 35-point drubbing by No. 1 North Carolina, Michigan State outlast fifth-ranked Texas, 67-63, last Saturday at the Toyota Center thanks to a late 3-pointer by Durrell Summers.

Goran Suton had 18 points off the bench and Summers added 14 as the Spartans captured their third straight win over the Longhorns.

Following its contest with the Golden Grizzlies, Michigan State faces a tough test to open conference play with a road game at No. 23 Minnesota.

Oakland started the season just 1-4 but has won seven of nine. Erik Kangas leads the way with 17.2 points a game while Johnathon Jones is averaging 14.6.

Kangas tied a season-high with six 3-pointers en route to 25 points, leading the Golden Grizzlies past Eastern Michigan,66-53.
