Dunn helps Baylor past Portland State
Dec 30, 2008 - 4:36 AM WACO, Texas (Ticker) -- LaceDarius Dunn had 22 points and six rebounds to lead 20th-ranked Baylor past upset-minded Portland State, 79-66, on Monday.Kevin Rogers and Curtis Jerrells scored 16 points apiece for the Bears (11-1), who have won five straight. Baylor used a 16-2 run late in the second half to open a double-digit lead it would not relinquish as the Vikings were unable to pull their second shocker of the season.
Portland State (10-4), which captured the upset of the season over then-No. 7 Gonzaga Tuesday, had its three-game winning streak snapped.
"We just know that when we come out and play on our 'A' game each and every night we can beat anybody in the country," Rogers said. "Coming in, we knew they were a good team. With all of the preparation and us coming in focused got us the win tonight."
Baylor led, 24-22, with 5 1/2 minutes remaining in the first half, but gave themselves some breathing room with suffocating defense.
Dunn sank two of his four 3-pointers during the run and Portland State managed just two points during a five-minute span as the Bears pulled away before the break.
"We did what we need to and we did a good job of getting stops and limiting (Jeremiah) Dominguez touches as well as not allowing (Phil Nelson) get a lot of open looks," Jerrells said. "Without those two they can't really do much so we did a good job of taking them away for that stretch."
Dominguez, who leads the Vikings with 13.5 points per game, scored just two points on 1-of-9 shooting.
The Bears led by as many as 26 in the second half. Rogers scored eight points during a 12-2 run to start the second half as Portland State missed 11 of its first 13 field-goal attempts and turned the ball over four times in the opening 7 1/2 minutes.
"Gonzaga really doesn't throw the ball in the paint that much and they really didn't take advantage of our lack of height like Baylor did," Portland State coach Ken Bone said. "Baylor exposed us in most every area of the game - inside and outside, on transition and quickness. They did a good job."
Dominic Waters led the way with 18 points, Phil Nelson had 16 points and eight rebounds while Jamie Jones added 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Vikings.
Portland State closed to within 12 late, but the result was never in doubt.
"It is frustrating from the standpoint that to be a great team you can't let teams back into (the game) because sooner or later they are going to take advantage of it," Baylor head coach Scott Drew said. "It is a teachable moment for us to continue to work on."
