Teague, Wake Forest outlast Radford
Dec 31, 2008 - 3:56 AM WINSTON-SALEM, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Jeff Teague scored 19 points as sixth-ranked Wake Forest pulled away from Radford in the second half for an 83-61 win on Tuesday.Freshman Al-Farouq Aminu recorded a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds and James Johnson added 12 and 12.
The Demon Deacons (12-0) were actually outrebounded, 43-38, in the game. However they forced 22 turnovers and converted 20-of-27 attempts from the free-throw line.
It was a tight contest for longer than expected as Wake Forest struggled to distance itself from the upset-minded Highlanders until midway through the second half.
"I told our guys that I think we didn't come out initially with the right mindset and I think a lot of credit goes to Radford for that," Wake Forest coach Dino Gaudio said. "I thought they played with a lot of energy and a lot of emotion in the first half."
Leading 47-44 with 14:07 left in the game, the Demon Deacons outscored the visitors by a 29-9 margin over the next 11:12 minutes to pull away.
"Wake Forest is a great team - deep, long, well coached and in great shape," Radford coach Brad Greenberg said. "They are a handful for anybody. They wore us down. I think we played well for a pretty good stretch of the game. It was really tough for us to be able to do it for 40 minutes."
Teague scored 11 points during the spurt and Radford committed seven turnovers.
Radford (4-9) hung around for most of the first half but went scoreless for three minutes late as Wake Forest went on an 11-0 run, taking a 39-32 lead into halftime.
"They are patient, smart in attacking zone and did pretty well at trying to get shots," Greenberg said. "Our zone isn't bad, we were trying to match up and do some things that were pretty sound defensively."
Artsiom Parakhouski collected 15 points and 16 rebounds while Joey Lynch-Flohr and Kenny Thomas scored 14 apiece for the Highlanders.
"I think our post guys were surprised at how good Lynch-Flohr and Parakhouski were," Gaudio said. "I thought those guys did a very good job of the interior. I think we came out in the second half and played more of our style of basketball. I think that really helped us. This was a good win for us."
