Boston College still suffering post-upset hangover

Jan 11, 2009 - 5:41 AM CHESTNUT HILL, Massachusetts (Ticker) -- Boston College hasn't gotten any mileage out of their biggest win of the season.

Brian Asbury and Dwayne Collins both scored 13 points to lead Miami to a 77-71 victory over No. 24 Boston College in the Atlantic Coast Conference on Saturday.

It was the second straight loss for the Eagles (13-4, 1-1 ACC) since they beat then-No. 1 North Carolina in Chapel Hill. The Eagles were toppled by Harvard on Tuesday.

Freshman Reggie Jackson hit two free throws with 33 seconds left to pull Boston College within, 70-69. But Asbury made a pair of free throws and Collins drew a crucial charging foul on Tyrese Rice on the ensuing possession.

It was the first road win over Boston College for Miami (12-3, 1-1) since January 24, 1999. The Hurricanes have now won nine of 10.

Rice scored 21 points for Boston College (13-4, 1-1), which has lost six of its last seven conference home games.

Sophomore swingman Rakim Sanders finished with 18 points and five rebounds, while Jackson came off the bench to contribute 14 points and five rebounds for the Eagles.

"I feel like whenever we play a team that we're supposed to beat, or is not at our level I play down," Sanders said. "I don't know what it is but I have to break the habit."

The Hurricanes were ahead 55-48 with 11:50 to play, before the Eagles went on an 8-2 run to close within 57-56 with 5:23 to go. Miami responded with an 8-3 run - which included two 3-pointers - to extend the lead to 65-59 with 4:07 remaining.

Boston College hung around with a 10-5 push that made it a one-point game with 33 seconds to go. Rice scored seven points and Jackson added three in the 10-5 run. Jackson capped the spurt by stripping Miami's Jack McClinton, drawing a foul and sinking two free throws.

Miami held on for the win thanks to Collins' big play on defense and clutch foul shooting. The Hurricanes made 7-of-8 free throws in the final 33 seconds and were 27-of-33 from the line overall.

Collins got the call on Rice but it could have gone either way and it left Boston College coach Al Skinner a little confused.

"I've got to get an interpretation on what an offensive foul is because I don't understand it," Skinner said. "So I have to find out. My understanding is different than what I saw this evening, so I have got to figure out what it is so I can coach my guys better."
