Unbeaten Wake Forest opens conference play with UNC

Jan 11, 2009 - 2:28 PM No. 3 North Carolina (14-1) at No. 4 Wake Forest (13-0), 8:00 p.m. EST

WINSTON-SALEM, North Carolina (Ticker) -- North Carolina was stunned in its first Atlantic Coast Conference game of the season. It does not get any easier on Sunday.

The third-ranked Tar Heels will try and avoid an 0-2 start in the ACC when they visit unbeaten No. 4 Wake Forest.

North Carolina (14-1, 0-1 ACC) lost two conference games all of last season but could fall into a hole after dropping an 85-78 contest to Boston College on January 4.

Tyler Hansbrough scored 24 points as the Tar Heels bounced back from their first loss with a 108-70 rout of the College of Charleston on Wednesday. The school's all-time leading scorer, who is averaging 22.9 points, has scored 20 or more in his last nine contests.

It is the first ACC game of the season for Wake Forest, which has tied the third-best start in school history. It won the first 14 games to begin the 1980-81 campaign and the first 15 contests in the 1926-27 season.

The Demon Deacons have not played since an impressive 94-87 victory at Brigham Young on January 3. The win snapped BYU's 53-game home winning streak.

Jeff Teague scored 30 points in the win and James Johnson added 22 and 15 rebounds. Teague leads the team at 19.6 per contest.

North Carolina has won the last four meetings, including two straight at Wake Forest.

The Demon Deacons are one of three unbeaten teams left in Division I. Top-ranked Pittsburgh (14-0) and No. 15 Clemson (16-0) are the others.
