Oklahoma hosts Texas in early Big 12 showdown

Jan 12, 2009 - 5:22 PM No. 11 Texas (12-3) at No. 5 Oklahoma (15-1), 9:00 p.m. EST

NORMAN, Oklahoma (Ticker) -- Picked to win the Big 12 Conference this season, Oklahoma knows it will have to defend its home court - especially against the other contenders.

The fifth-ranked Sooners host No. 11 Texas in an important Big 12 matchup on Monday.

Oklahoma (15-1, 1-0 Big 12) was projected to be the winner of the conference in the preseason coaches' poll - just edging out Texas.

Blake Griffin continued his dominant campaign with 29 points and 15 rebounds as Oklahoma posted a 61-53 victory at Kansas State in its conference opener on Saturday. The sophomore is averaging 22.5 points and 14.1 rebounds with 13 double-doubles in 16 games.

The Sooners will have to prove they can beat the Longhorns, who have won the last six meetings - including three a season ago.

Texas (12-3, 1-0) won its conference opener with a 75-67 victory over Iowa State on Saturday.

Damion James scored 19 points and Gary Johnson added 17 and nine rebounds for the Longhorns, who only made 3-of-14 from the arc.

Leading scorer A.J. Abrams continued his recent struggles with just eight points on 2-of-10 shooting. The senior, who was averaging 20.9 points over his first 10 games, is averaging eight points over his last three contests and shooting 23 percent (8-of-35) over that span.
