Gonzaga aims to continue rolling in West Coast Conference

Jan 31, 2009 - 11:23 AM San Diego (12-9) at No. 25 Gonzaga (15-4), 6:00 p.m. EST

SPOKANE, Washington (Ticker) -- Now that Gonzaga took a big step toward its ninth straight West Coast Conference regular-season crown, it has to stay on stride.

The 25th-ranked Bulldogs go for their seventh straight win when they host San Diego on Saturday.

Gonzaga (15-4, 6-0 WCC) stands alone atop the standings after defeating Saint Mary's, 69-62, on Thursday. The loss ended the Gaels' school-record, 15-game winning streak.

Matt Bouldin scored 17 points and Steven Gray added 14 in the win as the Bulldogs took advantage after Gaels leading scorer Patrick Mills left the contest late in the first half with a sprained right wrist. Gonzaga outscored Saint Mary's, 36-23, after the break.

San Diego (12-9, 4-2) has dropped two straight games after a six-game winning streak, including Thursday's 69-55 setback to Portland.

Gyno Pomare scored 18 points in the loss to lead the Toreros, who beat the Bulldogs in the WCC tournament championship last season.

Pomare leads San Diego in scoring at 14.5 points per game.
