Purdue goes for sixth straight victory

Jan 31, 2009 - 11:23 AM Michigan (14-7) at No. 17 Purdue (16-4) 1:00 p.m. EST

WEST LAFAYETTE, Indiana (Ticker) -- A popular pick to win the Big Ten regular-season crown, Purdue got off to an unexpectedly rocky start in conference play.

The 17th-ranked Boilermakers have recovered from back-to-back losses and go for their sixth straight win when they host Michigan on Saturday.

Purdue (16-4, 5-2 Big Ten) is coming off a pair of hard-fought road wins over Wisconsin and Minnesota.

Against the Badgers, the Boilermakers used timely 3-point shooting to escape with a 64-63 victory. Keaton Grant, Chris Kramer and Robbie Hummel all knocked down long-range jumpers in the final three minutes as Purdue overcame a barrage of 11 treys by Wisconsin.

E'Twaun Moore scored 17 points and fell one assist shy of a season-high with six for the Boilermakers.

Michigan (14-7, 4-5) started off Big Ten play 3-1, but has lost four of five because of its continuing struggles on the offensive end. The Wolverines have broken 60 points only once in the last five games, a 68-59 win over Northwestern.

With its lone road conference triumph coming against Indiana, which is winless in league play, Michigan will need to improve away from home in order to build on a non-conference resume that includes wins over Duke and UCLA.

Manny Harris had 22 points and 12 rebounds but committed 10 of Michigan's 21 turnovers in a 72-58 loss to Ohio State on Wednesday.
