North Carolina goes for fifth straight win

Jan 31, 2009 - 11:21 AM No. 6 North Carolina (18-2) at N.C. State (11-7), 3:30 p.m. EST

RALEIGH, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Sixth-ranked North Carolina goes for its fifth straight win when it visits North Carolina State in an Atlantic Coast Conference matchup on Saturday.

The Tar Heels (18-2, 4-2 ACC) avoided an upset on Wednesday, as Ty Lawson hitting a running 3-pointer at the buzzer to give UNC an 80-77 victory at Florida State.

North Carolina trailed by three with under two minutes to go in the contest before Danny Green's three-point play tied the score with 1:12 remaining. After Florida State failed to score, Lawson went the length of the court in three seconds before tossing up a runner from the arc to beat the clock.

Lawson's improbable shot helped offset a rare subpar game for Tyler Hansbrough, who was held to a season-low eight points. Lawson had 21 points and Danny Green scored 20.

N.C. State (11-7, 2-4) is coming off an 84-81 overtime victory over Miami on Tuesday.

Courtney Fells scored 24 points and Brandon Costner added 21 in the win, which was just the second in the Wolfpack's last seven games.

North Carolina won both meetings last season.
