Utah State aims to conintinue dominance of WAC
Feb 7, 2009 - 1:04 PM Louisiana Tech (9-14) at No. 22 Utah State (22-1) 9:05 p.m. ESTLOGAN, Utah (Ticker) -- Utah State celebrated its first national ranking in five seasons with its nation-leading 17th straight win in its last contest.
The 22nd-ranked Aggies will look to extend that streak and stay perfect in the Western Athletic Conference when they host Louisiana Tech on Saturday.
Ranked for the first time since the 2003-04 season and for just the second time in 31 years, Utah State (22-1, 10-0 WAC) used a potent long-range attack to down New Mexico State, 78-59, on Thursday.
Gary Wilkinson led all five starters in double figures with 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as the Aggies made 12-of-22 attempts from behind the arc. Tyler Newbold sank five for 17 points and Jared Quayle added 12 points on four treys.
Utah State downed the Bulldogs earlier this season despite its lowest offensive output of the season. Wilkinson scored 17 points and the Aggies closed the contest on a 13-0 run to capture a 50-37 win on January 8.
Louisiana Tech (9-14, 3-7) snapped a four-game losing streak with a 78-75 win over Nevada Thursday, but have still lost eight of 11 overall.
Kyle Gibson scored 16 points and Magnum Rolle added 15 to lead the Bulldogs to the win, just their second in their last 10 road games.
