Gonzaga, Memphis step outside conferences for showdown

Feb 7, 2009 - 1:03 PM No. 15 Memphis (19-3) at No. 18 Gonzaga (17-4) 9:00 p.m. EST

SPOKANE, Washington (Ticker) -- After claiming an impressive win in its conference, 18th-ranked Gonzaga will try to forge an even bigger one outside its league when it hosts No. 15 Memphis on Saturday.

The Bulldogs, who have won eight straight West Coast Conference titles, proved once again that they are the top dogs in the Pacific Northwest by throttling second-place Portland, 93-78, on Thursday in a West Coast Conference clash.

Matt Bouldin scored 26 points and all five starters for Gonzaga were in double figures as the team's smothering zone defense suffocated the Pilots in the second half, leading to a care-free victory after trailing by one point at halftime.

The Bulldogs, who lead the nation by limiting opponents to shoot 36 percent from the field this season, will need another well-balanced attack to get past the Tigers.

Memphis has been unstoppable since suffering a seven-point setback to then-No. 11 Syracuse on December 20, winning each of its last 13 games, including a 79-66 victory over Southern Methodist on Wednesday.

Freshman Tyreke Evans scored 26 points, Shawn Taggert added 14 and Robert Dozier contributed 13 for the Tigers, who pushed their winning streak against Conference USA opponents to an even 50 games.
