Pittsburgh seeks to keep DePaul winless in Big East

Feb 7, 2009 - 12:55 PM No. 5 Pittsburgh (20-2) vs. DePaul (8-15), 2:00 p.m EST

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Pittsburgh finds a rare soft spot in the Big East schedule when it faces DePaul on Saturday.

Still, the fifth-ranked Panthers do not want to become the Blue Demons' first conference victim this season.

In the history of the conference, only two teams have failed to notch a victory in conference play. Pittsburgh (20-2, 7-2 Big East) does not seem a likely victim for the DePaul with its lofty ranking but the Panthers are not going to be overconfident.

"We're not going to look past anybody," junior guard Jermaine Dixon told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "We need every victory we can get. Even though they don't have any victories in the Big East, they're going to come out and compete."

DePaul (8-15, 0-10) has been beaten up by conference foes, losing by an average of 13.5 points per game. Making the Blue Demons' task even tougher is the questionable status of leading score Dar Tucker, who missed a loss to Marquette earlier this week with a sprained ankle.

The Panthers are coming off a 92-72, non-conference victory victory against Robert Morris and have won four of five. They are paced by senior forward Sam Young, who averages 18.1 points per game and sophomore center DeJuan Blair (14.9 ppg, 12.7 rpg).

The teams that went through a Big East season winless were Boston College (0-6) in 1979-80 and Miami (0-18) in 1993-94.
