After lengthy break, Miami tries to stop North Carolina

Feb 15, 2009 - 7:21 AM No. 3 North Carolina (22-2) at Miami (15-8) 7:45 p.m. EST

CORAL GABLES, Florida (Ticker) -- North Carolina is riding high after a thrilling win in one of college basketball's biggest rivalries.

Miami would love to end the party after a long layoff.

The third-ranked Tar Heels go for their ninth straight win on Sunday when they visit the Hurricanes.

North Carolina (22-2, 8-2 ACC) took over sole possession of first place in the Atlantic Coast

Conference on Wednesday, rallying for a 101-87 victory over No. 5 Duke.

Ty Lawson scored 21 of his 25 points in the second half, Tyler Hansbrough had 17 points while Danny Green and Wayne Ellington added 15 each for the Tar Heels, who outscored the Blue Devils 57-35 en route to becoming the first team to score 100 points on Duke in a span of 457 games.

North Carolina's run of success should continue against Miami (15-8, 4-6), which has lost four of its last five games, including a 78-75 overtime loss to the Blue Devils on February 7.

The Hurricanes owned a 38-22 lead three minutes into the second half but failed to hold off Duke's charge, needing a three-pointer from Jack McClinton with 15 seconds left to force overtime.

Miami was clearly overmatched in the extra session, failing to score until McClinton's 3-pointer with 32 seconds remaining.
