Louisville eyes yet another win against Providence

Feb 18, 2009 - 11:26 AM Providence (16-9) at No. 7 Louisville (19-5) 7:30 p.m. EST

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (Ticker) -- A visit from a team it usually dominates should help Louisville stay right in the thick of the pursuit for the regular-season title in the Big East.

The seventh-ranked Cardinals go for their seventh straight win against Providence when the teams meet on Wednesday.

Louisville (19-5, 10-2 Big East) is one game behind first-place Connecticut in the conference standings and should stay within striking distance against the Friars, who haven't beaten the Cardinals in 31 years.

Louisville hasn't lost to Providence since a 57-51 road setback on November 30, 1977, going 4-0 at home in the series since the defeat. Coach Rick Pitino, who led the Friars to the Final Four in 1987, is 3-0 in his career against his former team.

The Cardinals bounced back from their worst loss of the season, a 33-point drubbing against Notre Dame on Thursday, with a dominating victory of their own. Louisville shot 59 percent (39-for-66) from the field and drilled a season-high 18 3-pointers en route to a 99-54 victory over DePaul on Sunday.

Providence (16-9, 8-5) has rebounded from three straight losses with back-to-back wins, including a 78-68 victory over Rutgers on Saturday.
