Memphis goes for 17th straight win vs. Southern Methodist

Feb 18, 2009 - 11:27 AM Southern Methodist (7-16) at No. 6 Memphis (22-3) 8:00 p.m. EST

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Now owners of the country's longest winning streak, Memphis puts that mark on the line when it hosts Southern Methodist on Wednesday.

The Tigers (22-3, 10-0 C-USA) have won 16 straight this season and 52 in a row in league play. They will look to take care of the Mustangs for the second time this season, although Memphis faced a surprising test in the first matchup.

Freshman Tyreke Evans scored a season-high 26 points, but the Tigers needed a 21-5 second-half run to put away the Mustangs, who actually held a brief lead in the second half before falling, 79-66.

In its last contest, Memphis dominated Southern Miss in the second half en route to a 72-47 victory Saturday. Evans scored 19 in the win while Antonio Anderson and Robert Dozier added 12 apiece.

Southern Methodist (7-16, 1-9) sits in last place in Conference USA and has lost seven straight in league action.

The Mustangs are coming off a 78-75 loss to Alabama-Birmingham on Saturday. Paul McCoy, who leads the team with 13.8 points per game, scored 29 in the loss.
