Air Force looks to continue hot start

Dec 6, 2006 - 4:25 PM TX Pan American (5-3) at No. 23 Air Force (8-1) 9:00 pm EST

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado (Ticker) -- In its last contest, Air Force matched its school-record 8-1 start from last season. On Wednesday, they will try to set a new mark.

After achieving their highest ranking in program history, the 23rd-ranked Falcons will host Texas-Pan American.

The Falcons started the season with seven games in 12 days, but despite the packed schedule, they are having one of the best campaigns the program has ever seen.

Led by former Denver Nuggets coach Jeff Bzdelik, Air Force is now a national force. On March 8, 2004, the Falcons were ranked 25th in the Coaches' Poll, the only other time they made an appearance in the Top 25 before this Monday's rankings came out.

In its last game, Air Force topped Indiana University-Purdue University-Fort Wayne, 78-66, on Saturday. Dan Nwaelele scored a career-high 26 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the field and 11-of-11 from the line.

On Saturday, the Broncs dropped a disappointing 64-63 decision to LaSalle, as the Explorers scored four points in the final eight seconds for the comeback victory. Brian Burrell led UTPA with 16 points.

Air Force leads the series with the Broncs, 8-7. The Falcons have won the last two meetings, including an 81-68 victory last season at Clune Arena.
