Marquette continues Big East title drive at Georgetown

Feb 21, 2009 - 2:00 PM No. 11 Marquette (22-4) at Georgetown (14-10) 2:00 p.m. EST

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- While Marquette is aiming for the regular-season Big East title, Georgetown is just hoping to keep its slim NCAA Tournament hopes alive.

The 11th-ranked Golden Eagles go for their third straight win on Saturday when they visit the struggling Hoyas.

Marquette (22-4, 11-2 Big East) enters Saturday's contest tied with fourth-ranked Pittsburgh (24-2, 11-2) and No. 7 Louisville (20-5, 11-2) for second place in the Big East, one-half game behind top-ranked Connecticut (24-2, 12-2).

The Golden Eagles didn't do themselves any favors by dropping back-to-back contests at South Florida and then-No. 13 Villanova earlier this month, but have since bounced back with consecutive victories over St. John's and Seton Hall.

In a 79-67 victory over Seton Hall on Tuesday, Wesley Matthews scored 24 points and Lazar Hayward added 14 for Marquette, which opened the second half with a 16-3 run.

Georgetown (14-10, 5-8) has endured a tough season and may have seen their tournament hopes disappear after losing seven of its previous eight games before a 65-40 victory over South Florida on Wednesday.

That win won't do much help the Hoyas NCAA resume, however, as the Bulls (8-17, 3-10) are 14th in the Big East standings.
