UCLA looks to continue title drive vs. Washington State

Feb 21, 2009 - 2:09 PM Washington State (13-13) at No. 15 UCLA (20-6) 3:00 p.m. EST

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- A thrilling win against the top team in the Pac-10 is exactly the boost UCLA needed to spark its title defense.

The 15th-ranked Bruins continue their push for a fourth straight regular-season conference crown when they host Washington State on Saturday.

After dropping back-to-back games at then-No. 18 Arizona State and Arizona last week, UCLA found itself looking up at 19th-ranked Washington, which took over first place in the Pac-10.

The Bruins (20-6, 9-4) got their regular-season championship drive back on track Thursday, however, battling for an 85-76 victory over Washington to move within 1 1/2 games of the Huskies for the top spot in the conference.

Josh Shipp scored 20 points, Darren Collison added 17 and Nikola Dragovic contributed 15 and eight rebounds for UCLA.

"This was a gut-check week for us and we responded to the first half of that gut check," Bruins coach Ben Howland told the Los Angeles Times. "I never had doubts about this team. We showed a lot of character the way we bounced back for this win."

The Cougars (13-13, 5-9) are coming off a 61-51 setback to Southern California on Thursday - their second straight loss and seventh in their last nine games.
